How using modern cloth nappies CAN be simple!

Do you want to try modern cloth nappies on your baby, but you are not sure it will work for you?

I want to share some ways that we have enlisted to make them work for us.

CHOOSING A NAPPY BRAND...
We purchased about 15 nappies from Peapods. We have been very happy with this brand, but I do know people who have used other brands who are not happy with the products. I recommend asking around or researching your chosen brands on the forums. There are plenty of nappy forums out there on the net. The Peapod nappies were too big for our little one for the first say... three to four weeks of his life. Don't be put off, use old fashioned cloth or disposable nappies until they fit your bub!

MAKE IT EASY...
We purchased something called a little squirt which is a toilet attachment that cleans nappies. We use the little squirt to spray the refuse into the toilet (it's also great for CLEANING the toilet!) We then throw the nappies into a nappy bucket for washing. Try to remember to pull apart the inner and outer before rinsing.

FREQUENCY...
We generally wash the nappies every second morning using the pre-wash cycle on our washing machine with a little nappy treatment detergent, then when it beeps for the main wash we throw in a little detergent and press go. We preset the washing machine on a low water setting so the machine doesn't need to do the "water level sensing". You may need to wash more frequently for your newborn. That said, follow the instructions for care on your particular nappies!

DRYING...
We try to dry our nappies in the sun, but some days are too cold to dry them completely so we invested in a dryer for those occasions. If you have modern cloth nappies you may as well use them!

I wish you well and I would love to hear your tips / tricks / queries on the subject of cloth nappies!

Great post Anna.
Good point about being able to use the Little Squirt for cleaning the toilet! This would certainly extend its useful life after babies are toilet trained.

Certainly there are times when simply flushing the toilet over the nappy held in the bowl doesn't quite cut it. If, like me, you don't have a Squirt, the simplest for a sticky poo is just to soak the nappy in water, then pour the water away down the toilet. Some hand-washing may be required...
What can I say, having a baby in cloth nappies really does cure you of any squeamishness!

I've used the brand "real nappies" for both my little ones and found it great. I've also used cloth wipes rather than bought ones. I've found the peapods bamboo wipes really good, I keep a lidded container full of water with the nappy stuff and pop one in when needed,a few drops of tea tree oil in the water is good, the great part is they can be washed at the same time as the nappies. Great for the environment and your pocket.
